If you decide to make flying your chosen career it is important that you understand what is required in way of qualifications.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to hold a Commercial Pilots Licence and you will need to pass a Class One Medical conducted by a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner.
A Commercial Pilots Licence enables pilots to fly for hire or reward. Commercial Pilots are authorised to fly;
Single pilot aircraft as pilot in command while the aircraft is engaged in any operation.
Multi pilot aircraft as pilot in command but for private or aerial work operations only.
Co-pilot of an aircraft engaged in any operation.
CASA set minimum requirements in regard to flying hours required to qualify for your Commercial Pilot Licence.
You must have passed a CASA approved integrated CPL course where the theory and flying training are co-ordinated and acquired 150 hours in aeroplanes with at least:
> 70 hours as pilot in command
> 20 hours cross country as pilot in command
> 10 hours instrument flight
or have acquired at least 200 hours flight time including at least-
> 100 hours as pilot in command
> 100 hours of flight time in aeroplanes
> 20 hours cross country flight time as pilot in command of an aeroplane
> 10 hours instrument flight time in aeroplanes |
Applicants are also required to pass the CASA Commercial Pilots Licence Exams and successfully pass a flight test.
The training for a Commercial Pilot Licence is largely an extension of the training received during the Private Pilot Licence. It expands on commercial concepts such as higher performance aircraft training, passenger handling and briefing, weight and balance requirements and extended cross-country navigation.
The aircraft used in the commercial training are a Cessna 172 and a Cessna 182RG. The Cessna 182RG is a comfortable, high wing; four place aircraft that is fitted with a constant speed propeller and retractable under carriage. This aircraft plays a major role in the commercial training program, as it is the first of the higher performance aircraft flown.
Once you have qualified and have been issued with your Commercial Pilots Licence you may now be employed to fly aeroplanes. Getting your first job can be difficult but not impossible. We advise that you discuss this with our Chief Flying Instructor who has many years experience in the General Aviation Industry.
To enhance your employment opportunities you may wish to proceed with further ratings and endorsements, which enable you to operate more complicated aircraft in more challenging environments.
For a list of these ratings & endorsements, this includes a description of each, use the "Endorsements & Ratings" button at the top of this page Whilst technically you will not require these qualifications immediately upon completing your Commercial Pilot Licence, any additional qualifications above and beyond the basic commercial licence will assist you in your pursuit of employment.
If you choose not to obtain these qualifications before commencing work as a pilot, you will certainly need them to progress throughout your career.
The most cost effective way of doing your training is on a full time basis, but it is not the only way. We prefer to discuss this with you in order to determine what you wish to achieve. We can then recommend a program to suit. |
