FLYING TRAINING | Discovery Flights | Private Pilot Licence
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age to hold a private pilot licence. A Private Pilot Licence enables pilots to fly themselves or passengers anywhere in Australia for recreational purposes, not for hire or reward, in good weather by day.
CASA set minimum requirements in regard to flying hours required to qualify for your Private Pilot Licence. The minimum flight time for the issue of a PPL is as follows:

> 47 hours total flight time
> 5 hours solo general flight time
> 5 hours solo cross-country flight time
> 2 hours instrument flight time

Applicants must also have passed a written examination and flight test. There are a number of options available to help you with your studies. The exams required are "multiple choice" or "open book".

There are a number of manuals to self-study, or for those who have been away from study for a while you may prefer the classroom option. The best way to make a decision on this is to discuss your situation and requirements with us.

As regards the time required to achieve the Private Pilots Licence, this is dictated by circumstances e.g. availability, weather, application to theory requirements and finances. Like anything worthwhile, the more time and effort expended the easier it becomes. Phase one; the student pilot licence can easily be completed in 3 weeks full time, following the issue of the student pilot licence from CASA.

The Private pilot licence can be completed in 12 weeks, again subject to availability and weather.

The aircraft we use for the Private Pilots Licence are a Cessna 152 and Cessna 172.
The Cessna 152 is a basic trainer used primarily for abinitio (Latin: from the beginning) training. It is a high wing, two seater aircraft. Its flying characteristics have made it one of the world's most popular training aircraft. The C152 is also used for aerobatic training.

The Cessna 172 is used as the student progresses through the training program. This aircraft is one step up from the C152 in both size and performance. The higher speed offered by the C172 makes it ideal for its role in the training program. It is also used for basic instrument flight training and cross-country navigation training.

Your navigation training involves cross country flying, both dual and solo, teaches how to read maps, navigate visually with reference to the ground and conduct an extended flight in a safe and comfortable environment.

You are also required to have passed a multiple choice theory examination. At the completion of your navigation training a flight test is carried out by our Chief Flying Instructor. Once passed you will be issued with your Private Pilot Licence.

Once issued, a flight crew licence is valid for life, however, the holder is required to undergo regular recency and medical checks.
